The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was announced by Qualcomm last month and there was a lot of talk about the chip’s performance. For example, it has 200% higher performance compared to the brand’s first generation SoC. However, more testing with the component is still needed to find out how it behaves.
That’s what user Golden Retriever (@Golden_Reviewer) did when testing the chipset’s firepower. In fact, it managed to be 13% more powerful compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, which is present in Samsung’s entire Galaxy S23 line. But, this came at a cost.
According to user tests, the chip was worse in terms of energy efficiency compared to the last generation overclocked version. Consumption on average was 6.27 watts, representing an efficiency reduction of 11%, which is not very positive for the chip.
To give you an idea, consumption is up to 28% higher compared to the predecessor model. Therefore, the performance score of 69.28 against 60.86 for the previous model does not seem to be a great advantage when taking into account the situation related to consumption. The model tested was the Xiaomi 14 Pro.
Just like the last generation, Qualcomm implemented a high-performance core in its new Snapdragon chip. However, it increased the frequencies in all Cortex-A720 cores present in the component. Therefore, multi-core performance should improve, but this may be what caused this drop in efficiency.
This change leads to disadvantages such as reducing the battery and its useful life. So, it is important to pay attention to upcoming tests with devices that have this same chip, such as the next ROG Phone, from ASUS.
